Nusa Lembongan vs Nusa Penida

Nusa Lembongan vs Nusa Penida is less a contest than a choice of pace. The two islands sit a short boat ride apart, but they ask different things of a visitor. One is small and slow, built around the water. The other is large and dramatic, built around the cliffs. This guide sets out how they differ, and how to see both.
The short answer
Choose Nusa Lembongan for an easy few days by the sea. Choose Nusa Penida for clifftop scenery and a full day of driving between viewpoints. Most visitors do both: they stay on Nusa Lembongan and cross to Nusa Penida for a day.
Size and pace
Nusa Lembongan is small. You can cross it in minutes by scooter, and most of what matters sits close to the main beaches at Jungutbatu and Mushroom Bay. Nusa Penida is many times larger, and its best-known places are spread along the coast, with long stretches of road between them. On Nusa Penida a day buys you one part of the island. On Nusa Lembongan a day buys you most of it.
Scenery
Nusa Penida is known for its cliffs. Kelingking, Angel’s Billabong, Broken Beach and Diamond Beach are the names on most lists, with wide views and sheer drops. Nusa Lembongan is gentler: mangrove channels, seaweed farms, the blowhole at Devil’s Tear and a coastline of small bays. If you want a photograph from a clifftop, Nusa Penida delivers it. If you want a slow afternoon with the tide, Nusa Lembongan does.
Beaches and the sea
Beaches on Nusa Lembongan are generally easier for swimming, with calmer water close to shore at Jungutbatu and Mushroom Bay in good conditions. On Nusa Penida the best-known beaches sit at the foot of cliffs, reached by steep steps or paths, and the sea can be strong. Take local advice before swimming there. Both islands offer snorkelling, and trips from Nusa Lembongan often include Manta Point and Crystal Bay on Nusa Penida.
Getting around
Nusa Lembongan suits walking and short scooter rides, though the roads are narrow. Nusa Penida’s roads are longer, steeper and uneven in places, and many visitors hire a car with a driver for the day instead of riding. Ask locally about the condition of the road to any viewpoint before you set out.
Where to stay
Nusa Lembongan is compact, with food, beaches and boats within easy reach of most places to stay, which makes it the simpler base for a few nights. Accommodation on Nusa Penida is more spread out, and so are the sights. Lago is in Jungutbatu village on Nusa Lembongan.
Doing both
Nusa Lembongan vs Nusa Penida need not be either-or. Fast boats run to both islands from Sanur, and the crossing between them is short. Local operators run day trips and snorkelling tours from Nusa Lembongan to Nusa Penida. A sensible plan is to arrive on Nusa Lembongan, settle for a night or two, then spend a full day on Nusa Penida, ideally with a driver for the cliffs. Check the time of the last boat back before you go.

How to choose
- Choose Nusa Lembongan if you want a short, easy stay with calm beaches, snorkelling and sunsets close at hand.
- Choose Nusa Penida if clifftop views are the point, and you are happy to spend a day on the road.
- Choose both if you have three nights or more. Stay on Nusa Lembongan and cross for a day.
In October
October is the end of the dry season: hot, humid and quieter than July and August. Mola mola sightings at Crystal Bay are possible but less certain towards the end of the season. Our guide to the best time to visit Nusa Lembongan covers the season in more detail.
